What is Enough? Making The Most of Your Encore Years

Retirement is not a finish line for your savings. It becomes the time of Life  when what You have is meant to be lived with, and the question that unlocks it is simple: what is enough for You?

A fulfilled Life means maximizing the resources You have now, not just piling up more of them.

We work hard during our work years saving and growing. In our Encore years, the habit can quietly turn into a reflex that never switches off. Money has a job to do:

  • Funding experiences. Trips, time with family, learning something new, and the ordinary pleasures of a good week.
  • Creating peace of mind. Knowing there is enough lets You stop checking, stop worrying and start spending your attention elsewhere.
  • Taking risks and chasing dreams. The project You always postponed, the move You always thought about making etc. . Resources are what make a calculated risk possible.

A financial plan tells You whether the numbers work. A life plan tells You what the numbers are for:

  1. Align your money with your core values. If family, health or faith matter most, your spending should show it, and it often looks different from what a spreadsheet alone would suggest.
  2. Define what “enough” means to You. Enough is personal. Without your own definition, the goalposts keep moving and no amount ever feels sufficient.
  3. Choose personal joy over titles or status. Work handed You an identity and a rank. In retirement,  joy is a better measure of a day well spent.

The order matters. Decide what a good Life looks like first, then let the financial plan serve it. (***special note: I am not a Certified Financial Planner… please work with your Certified Financial Planner on your financial plan!)

When the paycheck stops, many retirees feel pulled between two fears: running out, and wasting what they built. Knowing your own “enough” settles both.

  • Less anxiety, more presence. With a clear number and a clear purpose, You can stop measuring yourself against someone else’s portfolio and be present in the day in front of You.
  • Permission to spend on what matters. Money earmarked for experiences and relationships gets used, instead of guarded for a someday that may not come.
  • A Life that does not need a title. Without a job to define You, personal joy becomes the guide: time with people You love, curiosity, service, rest.
  • Room to try something new. A cushion of peace of mind makes small risks feel safe, and an Encore phase is a good time to take them.

The pattern is the same each time: clarity about enough turns resources into days that feel full.

Make life better now, not later. Fulfillment does not wait at the end of the road. It happens along the journey, and the sooner you decide what is enough, the sooner you can start enjoying it.

So, continue looking forward to your Encore Phase with enthusiasm. Take care of yourself, make the most of every day, and always remember;

Never quit searching, never settle and never give up seeking your greater purpose!
